There's bluebells in the field There's fire in the pit So come and cook some sausages I'll make a pot of tea I'm up here in the forest No one is bothering me I shower in the open air With no electricity I'm free There's books to read a plenty There's a little veggie patch I'll go and plant some tatties there I'd like to learn to thatch Then I could build myself a place And live the simple life No worries and no stressful job I just need to find a wife Where might she be? We'd raise our kids like Mowgli I'd have no need to shave No need for things or money Just music by the flames I'd live like Grizzly Adams At one with beast and land In winter when it's chilly I'd venture into town And go for a pint And use the internet And go for a pint It seems I've just defeated the point of this songs But is it ever possible To know where we belong Right now this wood seems homely I'm happy as can be All I need's a lady A friend to visit me Where might she be?

Here I am Tuesday night and it's raining Here I am at the Royal Highland Show Here I am putting tents up it's pouring down Here I am what the f*ck for I don't know And it rains and it pours But I do like being outdoors Here I am Wednesday lunchtime still raining Here I am with my portable stove Here I am just one pan for my mushrooms Just one pan for my onions and cloves And it rains and it pours But I do like being outdoors Here I am Thursday morning sun shining Here I am turning wood on my lathe Here I am making rattles spoon carving Here I am oh I hope it don't rain But it rains and it pours But I do like being outdoors Here I am Friday's dawning planes flying by Here I am drinking whiskey and wine Here I am birdsong breaks into morning I promised Gavin I'd be up before 9 And it rains and it pours But I do like being outdoors Here I am Saturday night at Cole Henley's bar Here I am singing to the sunset Here I am playing ninjas drinking free beer Here I am wonder how drunk I'll get And it rains and it pours But I do like being outdoors Here I am Sunday night people leaving here Here I am drinking Matthew's home brew Here I am getting eaten by midges Talking politics and avoiding the queues And it rains and it pours But I do like being outdoors And it blows and it storms But I do like being outdoors I like peeing outdoors

Sweet Young Mairie you are oh so fine Sweet young Mairie won't you spend some time In my caravan I'm a lonely man Crazy Jimmy was a friend of mine We'd drink fine whiskey 'neath the pale moonshine In my caravan I'm a drunken man They shot poor Willy with a machine gun Innocent Willy and now he's gone From my caravan I'm a worried man God Bless my mother how I miss your home I miss your cooking where my bed is warm In my caravan I'm a chilly man But it's peaceful here where the birdies sing The stars shine brightly and the music rings From my caravan I'm a busy man For there's chairs a making and a fire to keep Burning gently for my food and tea In my caravan I'm a happy man

My beard is too long My beard is too long My beard is too long all my friends are gone My beard is too long My hair is nearly gone My hair is nearly gone All my hair is nearly gone I still want dreadlocks My hair is nearly gone Tell that girl I love Please tell that girl I love Tell that girl I love I love her still Please tell that girl I love Keep her safe from harm Please keep her safe from harm Keep her safe from harm and make her strong Please keep her safe from harm I'll go and climb a hill I'll go and climb a hill I'll go and climb a hill won't you tread with me We can climb this hill I'll sit and write this song I'll sit and write this song I'll sit and write this song won't you sit with me We can write this song I'd like to hear your drum I'd like to hear your drum I'd like to hear your drum and watch you sing I'd like to hear your drum My time will surely come My time will surely come My time will surely come how I'll miss you all When all my days are done My beard is too long My beard is too long My beard is too long all my friends are gone My beard is too long

about

Between April and October 2011 I lived in a caravan in a wood in Herefordshire, helping to teach green wood chairmaking courses with Mike Abbott.

There wasn't much to do in the evenings other than sit around a fire drinking ale and singing lamentful songs to wild woodland pixie girls that never showed up.

These songs (still far from complete) are the fruits of my time in the woods...
